## What is SwingCoach AI?

SwingCoach AI is an iPhone app that analyses a golf swing video and returns coaching on each of the six phases of the swing, plus one drill for the weakest phase. It is made by Robin Johansen in Norway and runs on iOS.

## What does it do with a swing video?

It splits the swing into six phases, scores each one, says in a sentence what went right or wrong in that phase, compares your body positions against reference zones built from hand-verified tour swings, and then names the weakest phase and gives you one drill for it.

## Who is SwingCoach AI for?

Golfers who practise deliberately and are working on something specific, typically around single figures and often playing tournaments. It works at any handicap, and the coaching adapts to the one you enter, but the product is built around testing a swing change and checking whether it held rather than around a first lesson.

## How do you film a swing for it?

Film down the line, from behind the ball along the target line, with the phone roughly one club length back. Stand the phone on a tripod or prop it on a bag, roughly one club length behind the ball. Film down the line: the camera behind the ball, looking along the target line. Get the whole swing in frame, from address to finish. Hit one ball. The app records at high frame rate and finds the six phases itself. A swing already in your camera roll works too, if it was filmed from the same angle.

## What are the six phases of the swing it analyses?

Address, takeaway, top, downswing, impact and finish. Address checks spine tilt, knee flex; Takeaway checks triangle intact; Top checks hands in the zone, lead arm straight, hips on the line, head level; Downswing checks hands in the slot, head level; Impact checks arms extended, posture kept, no dip; Finish checks trail heel rolled to the toe.

## How does the analysis work technically?

Pose tracking runs on the phone, and the six phase boundaries and the body-position checks are computed on device from that pose data as geometry rather than as a model call. The video itself is sent to a video-native language model, which watches the whole clip end to end and writes the coaching for each phase. That is the part that is new: earlier swing apps could measure a still frame but could not watch a motion.

## How is SwingCoach AI different from other golf swing apps?

Most swing apps run pose detection, reduce the swing to joint coordinates and match those against a template, which produces angles and a score. SwingCoach sends the video itself to a frontier multimodal language model, Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro, which watches the motion end to end and writes the coaching in sentences. On top of that you tell it what you are chasing during onboarding, whether that is speed, straighter shots, a particular feel or a player you admire, along with anything your body will not do. That changes which true finding it leads with and the words it uses. It never changes the score, never invents a fault and never hides one.

## What does SwingCoach AI cost?

The app is free to download. Pro costs $39.99 a month or $199.99 a year, which is $16.66 a month. The annual plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a reminder is sent two days before it ends. Packs of 5 swing reviews are sold separately as one-off purchases. There is no free monthly analysis quota. Analysing swings requires either an active Pro subscription or swing-review credits. List prices are US dollars. The App Store charges the equivalent in your local currency.

## How many golfers use SwingCoach AI, and where?

It is used in more than 20 countries across Europe, North America and Asia, with Scandinavia and North America the largest markets. More than 6,000 swings have been analysed as of September 2026. A former PGA professional in Norway uses it in his own practice.

## Who made SwingCoach AI, and is it actively maintained?

It is built by Robin Johansen, a golfer in Norway, and released on the App Store in March 2026. It has shipped regularly since; the current version and its release date are on the App Store listing and on the reference page. Development is ongoing rather than finished.

## What are its limitations?

The position comparison is calibrated for down-the-line footage, filmed from behind the ball along the target line. Face-on video records and stores fine, but the position checks are held back on angles they cannot judge honestly. The coaching is generated automatically and can be wrong. Phase detection can miss on unusual footage or an obstructed view. Reference zones are built from driver and iron swings. Putting is stored and tracked but is not the motion the zones describe.

## What happens to your swing videos?

They are stored against your account and are visible to you. Pose tracking happens on your phone; the video is uploaded so the model can write the coaching. Supabase provides authentication, database and video storage, Google's Gemini API generates the coaching text, RevenueCat handles subscription state, and Apple handles payments. Videos are not sold or shared with advertisers. Deleting a swing removes it with its analysis, and deleting your account removes everything within 30 days.

## Does it compare your swing to professional golfers?

It compares your body positions against reference zones derived from hand-verified tour swings, for both driver and iron, phase by phase. It shows the reference position beside your own frame. It does not claim any affiliation with, or endorsement by, the players those swings came from.

## The six phases in detail

1. **Address.** Setup, before the club moves. Positions checked: spine tilt, knee flex.
2. **Takeaway.** The first eighteen inches. Positions checked: triangle intact.
3. **Top.** The top of the backswing. Four positions, judged separately. Positions checked: hands in the zone, lead arm straight, hips on the line, head level.
4. **Downswing.** Transition into the ball. Positions checked: hands in the slot, head level.
5. **Impact.** The frame the ball is struck in. Positions checked: arms extended, posture kept, no dip.
6. **Finish.** Proof the ground was used. Positions checked: trail heel rolled to the toe.
